Kaitlyn Lee has been taking lessons from Mary Sue Tobin for four years. She is currently a sophomore at Mountain View High School. She is taking lessons for alto saxophone, but she is also the flute section leader in the Mountain View band. She was in a flute choir that went to state solo and ensemble last year. At Mt. View, Kaitlyn is in Jazz 1 and is also on the bowling team, golf team, in the environmental action club, a dosomething.org youth advisory council and enjoys traveling and reading.

Kaitlyn enjoys taking saxophone lessons because it is a fun instrument to play and there’s always something new to learn such as technique, style, etc. Not only is jazz band at Mt. View a great experience, but she was also in a sax quartet that went to state. There’s so many opportunities with sax! She enjoys taking lessons from Mary Sue because she is a great inspiration and role model and hearing her perform is a blast! Mary Sue helps Kaitlyn work on what she needs to or whatever comes up.

Mary Sue chose Kaitlyn as the student of the month because she has been studying with her with four years and in those years she has progressed immensely. She always comes to her lessons prepared and shows a true passion for the saxophone. In her spare time she is active in her band community and shows leadership. Crystal has been taking lessons for four and a half years. She enjoys playing the drums, because she likes playing in the school band and the drums allow her the freedom to play in many musical settings. Her favorite music to play is latin or drumline music.
Crystal enjoys learning from Joe, because he is very patient and always in a good teaching mood.
Crystal is in the 9th grade and currently attends Washougal High School where she plays in the band. Crystal also loves scrapbooking and playing the guitar.
Joe enjoys being Crystals teacher because she is remarkable at sight reading music and improvising. He says that she has the ability to play many styles and is very talented for her age. Joe’s favorite music book to teach from is The New Breed by Gary Chester.

Sasha has been taking lessons for about 8 years. She started out playing the Violin til she decided to switch to the Viola. She currently attends Mountain View High School where she takes AP and Honors courses. In addition to viola, Sasha also enjoys playing the piano and the accordian. Her other interests include sewing, knitting, and spending time with family and friends.
Sasha’s favorite books to play from are the Suzuki books by William Preucil. She enjoys taking lessons from Darrell Hunt. Darrell enjoys teaching Viola lessons because it has a richer and darker voice than the violin.
Darrell enjoys having Sasha as a student because “she is one of the most naturally musical and expressive students” he has ever heard. He said that her lessons are like attending a concert! The method book that Darrell teaches Sasha from is called Experience. Darrell’s fun book is called Mistakes.

Every year, Music Inc publishes its choices for the Retail Excellence Awards. This award can be won by any music retail store in the United States and Canada, but only 10 are chosen to win.
