Saxophone, Clarinet, and Flute
Logan Strosahl is a composer, saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist who recently relocated to Portland. Born in Seattle, Logan enjoyed the benefit of excellent music education early on, and knows how inspiring good teachers can be.
Touring internationally as part of the nationally lauded Roosevelt High School Jazz Band and participating in several elite high-school programs - such as the Gibson-Baldwin Grammy Band (2006, 2007) and the Vail Jazz Workshop (2005) — Logan then completed a B.A in Jazz Performance at New England Conservatory in Boston. Sunnyside Records released his debut album, Up Go We, to critical praise. Performing around New York city in venues such as Cornelia St Cafe and the Jazz Gallery, Logan continued to record, releasing Janus, a duo record with pianist Nick Sanders, and Book I of Arthur, some of which he performed at the Mar Del Plata Jazz festival in Argentina as part of a tour there in 2017. This was followed with a trio album, Sure, and, most recently, Book II of Arthur: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a “3rd-stream” chamber orchestra piece based on the 14th-century Middle English poem. For this project, Logan moved to Berlin to attend the Universität der Künste Berlin, completing a degree in Jazz Composition with the score for Sir Gawain as his Masters project. In 2020, Logan was a fellow in the Teach To Learn institute, a non-profit that funds collaboration between artists and music educators around the world. Logan composed a piece for the saxophone department at Kathmandu Conservatory, and taught a course on Jazz history.
Learning music is empowering, and the toolset developed by a student of music endures however long they may play. By learning fundamentals, it becomes an avenue to self-expression; and as a musician, the wide world of music becomes uniquely rewarding. Logan’s goal as a teacher is to follow and guide that exploration so that the student arrives at the music he or she loves with the technique required to engage in it. Fundamentals firmly in place, improvisation, composition, and musical awareness are practices for the student that push them to engage their ears and fingers in a way unique to them.
